So…not because I am Italian, but for the purpose of this story I assume that everyone knows what a truffle (tartufo in Italian) is.
In the world of gourmet foods, truffles are considered one treasure that is literally worth its weight in gold. They are usually too expensive for most consumers, with the exception of some parts of Northern Italy and Umbria where Tartufi are a main ingredient in local dishes.
You might be wondering why I am so into talking about truffles on a Saturday night instead of being out partying… well, because this is going to be an hilarious story. In New York City, in a restaurant where, supposedly, a range of classy and well educated people usually go, someone had the great idea to give life to a good story for me to write.
So..yesterday my friend Caro, who manages the restaurant, writes to me saying: “some idiot tonight thought white truffle was a cookie and put the whole piece in his mouth” and you will easily believe that it took me about 45 minutes to stop laughing.
The story actually starts with the smart guy coming into the restaurant and, while waiting to be seated, looking at a strangely shaped “thing” that the managers, for some inexplicable reasons (?!?) decided to keep and protect under a glass cover. The smarty asks my friend why they keep a cookie under a glass cover (right….cookie!) and my friend, almost astonished by the question, says…”well..because it is NOT a cookie!” and then she turns to get the menus for the guy’s party. You won’t believe it but, she didn’t even have time to turn back that this idiot opens the glass, picks the “cookie” and puts in his mouth! Exactly!! A hundred dollar worth of precious truffle confused for a cookie.
For some reasons the guy wasn’t charged for his mistake but hopefully he’ll be sent to Italy to learn the difference between a tarfufo and a biscotto! Dumb Dumb!
