Whole Foods…my beloved spot

October 13, 2009

After three years in NYC, my favorite place to sit and relax is still the same, the second floor at Whole Foods in Union Square.
There I go in the summer to cool down and in the winter to warm up (I would probably go in the other two seasons God gave us..if they weren’t so fleeting!).

At Whole Foods, the temperature is always just right. I sit by the window on a tall stool, sipping tea (I am bad Italian and bad New Yorker, I don’t do coffee)…and it feels like you can oversee the entire city from there, people walking, people running after a cab or a bus, or just running..and cars, lights everywhere. Sometimes I feel like some kind of catastrophe just happened and everyone is trying to escape from it, but then I realize that it’s just New York, where people are always in a rush and never have time to waste.

So, here I stay, surrounded by lots of people but somehow I can always isolate myself and just listen and enjoy the silence of the street. Well…this is my own way of seeing it but the thick windows kind of lock the all the noise outside.. and you can hear nothing, just observe. That is what I love so much about this place… the disconnection of senses, the quiet walking through this loud area, the multitude of thoughts, feelings and actions I experience.

We know our five senses so well that we now take them for granted: sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste… and my inspiration tonight is: pay more attention to those senses and enjoy the soul of the city around you and inside you until every little detail becomes part of a Whole new experience..

It’s 3am and it seems like NY is dragging me into the Whole not sleeping mode…

Good night
